"Actually, I've been involved with mariachi all my life, but with Isaiah, I've been involved for the last year," said Angelina Garcia, another mariachi participant. Some mariachi moms are pioneers of earlier youth groups. "I was the first female mariachi in a youth group in Arizona. So traditionally, we didn't have females in the mariachi and then we did, and the culture was a little different," Garcia said. "It wasn't as accepted as it is now. Now everyone wants to be a mariachi so it's kinda cool." "Things that I wanted to do when I was little, and I wasn't able, now my kids are doing," said Dagnino. |

Arizona Cat’s Eye, a 30-minute news magazine and online publication, features the best video news stories produced by students at the University of Arizona School of Journalism.
Produced once per semester, the reporters take viewers to a myriad of places in Southern Arizona, from the U.S.-Mexico border for a look at the impact of the border fence on wildlife, to downtown Tucson for a lesson on the city’s colonial past, to the UA campus and an ensuing battle to become the next starting quarterback.
