Derby Brats Coach Penny Tencherry said that although the league uses their website and myspace to get the word out to potential skaters, that the recent growth this year was due mainly to word of mouth recommendations.

"I think that roller derby is like, my favorite sport that I've ever been in. I like skating; it's my favorite thing to do," said Derby Brat Phoebe Torp, 11, who joined the league because she knew a friend that was involved.

Although the sport is dangerous, Tencherry said that in her three years as a coach she has never seen anyone get seriously injured while playing.

"You know you get bumps and bruises and sometimes you fall in a way that you don't want to fall but it just happens and you go home and ice it and come back the next day," said Tencherry.

About this site

Arizona Cat’s Eye, a 30-minute news magazine and online publication, features the best video news stories produced by students at the University of Arizona School of Journalism.

Produced once per semester, the reporters take viewers to a myriad of places in Southern Arizona, from the U.S.-Mexico border for a look at the impact of the border fence on wildlife, to downtown Tucson for a lesson on the city’s colonial past, to the UA campus and an ensuing battle to become the next starting quarterback.
